Metal-metal hip resurfacing has brought a renaissance of bone conservation in hip replacement. Others are sceptical of disaster following its widespread introduction. John Charnley was instrumental in stopping the progress in metal-metal joints 30 years ago, on the basis that they might cause cancer. Although no epidemic of metal-metal related cancers appeared, this concern still needs serious consideration.
We consider it a distinctly different science and art to the total hip. It will benefit from a focused society committed to improving this option in hip replacement, and allied techniques. A combination of scientists and surgeons and patients and industry is important to the success of this mission. Open and honest debate, and support for research are needed.
